The Zambezi River crosses the Barotse Floodplain, in the Western Province of Zambia and influences every aspect of the life of the Lozi people that inhabit it.

During several months of the year, large extensions of the plain are underwater and the only way to and from the Oblate Mission of Kalabo is by boat, navigating over flooded grasslands.

I have met personally with the young children in Africa that my wife and I try to help. But just as important for me, I have met personally with a number of Oblates and other Partners who are very insightful and who have helped me along my spiritual journey.

The Oblates Gave Me Hope

La Morita, Mexico

About six years ago, Adriana González started attending classes on sewing, popcicles making, manual arts, and textile painting at the San Eugenio Community Center, in La Morita near Tijuana, Mexico.

Since 1996 the Oblates of the San Eugenio de Mazenod Mission have been ministering to thousands of the more than 300,000 men, women and children many who like Adriana live in the Colonia La Morita and surrounding areas, on the outer edge of the city of Tijuana.

This coming September 29 through October 4, Partners and friends will attend “In The Footsteps Of De Mazenod,” a three days, 4 nights retreat in Aix-en-Provence, where the Missionary Oblates were founded.

Aix-en-Provence, France

The retreat will focus on the life of the congregation’s founder, Saint Eugene de Mazenod and how the Spirit moved him to abandon all for God’s poor.

“In The Footsteps Of De Mazenod” retreat will include travel to scenes in De Mazenod’s life in Aix, the Provence countryside and Marseille, where he was bishop.

The Mississippi Bluff, where the Ecological Center is located

The Oblate Ecological Initiative is a ministry of the US Province that reflects the Oblates’ efforts to respond to the priority of Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation. The Initiative intends to respond to questions such as:

“What does it mean to be fully human in a continually emerging Universe?”

“What does it mean to be a person of faith in a continually emerging Universe?”

Learning to cook with herbs

by exploring Creation’s Integrity, offering a deepened sense of connection with the Cosmic Christ through its two components: la Vista Ecological Learning Center and the Community-Supported Garden.

Through seasonal celebrations, weekend retreats, discussion courses, and Earth-literacy programs:

La Vista Ecological Learning Center assists participants of these gatherings to appreciate and integrate the emerging worldview into their spirituality and each part of their daily lives;

The Community-Supported Garden, created in 2001, promotes sustainable farming practices to its local members.
